This week I’m continuing with To Catch a Threeve.  I’ve skipped ahead a little.  Axel has laid a magical trap for the mysterious stalker and is waiting for him to make his move.

Axel’s nerves were on a knife’s edge as he wrapped himself in his cloak and pretended to sleep. He scanned the forest noises but detected nothing of the sneak. Perhaps he was more patient than Axel had given him credit for.

With alarm, he caught himself just short of falling asleep. That wasn’t like him. After a moment of tense awareness, he became sure a spell had been cast over them. His arms and legs felt wooden and his chest heavy. He could barely pry open his eyelids.

Unofficial Blurb for To Catch a Threeve

To Catch a Threeve is an m/m erotic  fantasy that takes place in the medieval land of Lacknor. Constable Axel Blackwood catches a thief and is astounded to see that he closely resembles the love he lost seven years ago in an attack by the evil woodland folk known as threeves.  He quickly realizes he’s fallen prey to dark magic, but can’t help becoming infatuated with his prisoner and is overwhelmed with the hope that he can at last bring his lost lover home.  Bryn Darrow, the half-threeve, half human orphan sent to trick Axel and rob him of much more than a simple gem finds himself equally as fascinated with his handsome human captor and the lure of some place to call home, but believes that the constable is in love with a dangerous illusion.

  1. Great snippet. I get the strong feel of his uneasiness and a great peek at his surroundings. The “With alarm” stopped me a moment. I take it that he’s starting to sleep and his nerves stopped him, but that idea didn’t flow easily for me. I had to think about it. Or maybe something else happened because of the wonderful description afterwards. The spell is intriguing, and I would want to read on.

  2. Oh I did not see this coming – your hero is so skillful, I wouldn’t have expected him to be ensnared by anything. So an excellent plot twist! I love your way with words, terrific snippet!

  4. Oh man…and that is a creepy feeling! I’ve been caught betwixt sleep and wake and had that sensation. I digress. 🙂 Good snippet, Alexis! I really wonder if there is a spell keeping them from moving! 🙂

  5. You have a very interesting premise. I wonder what’s happened to Axel? My only suggestion would be, at the beginning of the second paragraph, you might say “With alarm, Axel caught himself…” since you have two different “he”s in the first para, just to clarify a litte.

  6. I loved this snippet! The threat of danger had me sitting on the edge of my seat. I’m curious if a spell was really cast or if it’s all in his head, like maybe he’s drowsy because he’s so tired.

    Keep smiling,

  7. Feeling wooden and heavy does not sound like fun at all 😦 Perhaps the sneak has outwitted Axel? He doesn’t sound like an ordinary sneak if he can make the main character feel like that (unless, of course, he wasn’t the one to curse him). Very interesting story, looking forward to more next week 🙂
