Weekend Writing Warriors ~ If Not For The Fangs

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, the blog hop where a bunch of really awesome writers share snippets of ten sentences or less from their published work or work-in-progress.

This week I’m continuing to share from Death by Starlight, my m/m urban fantasy which just released last week.  In this scene, Zeke and Alistair are out on the Strait of Juan de Fuca hunting for the mermaid Mellosa.  For good or ill, they are about to find her.

An icy shiver crept along Zeke’s skin and ignited every nerve. The wind stilled and the boat settled into a trough, high swells of water obscuring everything but the sky. The sea around them became unnaturally becalmed, and Zeke’s shiver turned into a shudder. The surface was so glassy he could see the dark silhouette of his reflection.

Mellosa’s face replaced his own form, appearing suddenly out of the depths, bright white against black. Her hair rippled out in great streams of crimson, and her eyes were sea-foam green. She reminded Zeke of The Birth of Venus by Bernini. If not for the fangs biting into her full red lips and the eerie bluish aura emanating from her pearlescent skin, Mellosa would have been the very picture of human female beauty. If one was into that sort of thing.

“Something’s happening, but I don’t see her,” Alistair mumbled from his side of the boat.

Edge of Night 2: Death by Starlight

Ian and Zeke fought a battle against the queen of the dark realm in order to be together, but just when they think they might settle into as normal a life as elves living among humans might be able to expect, a new enemy threatens to tear them apart. While Zeke helps the shaman Alistair in his hunt for an elusive mermaid, Ian is called to confront a wicked nymph preying on tourists along Seattle’s waterfront. Zeke and Ian soon discover that the defeated Queen Ysolde has spread her evil into the sea realms, and danger lurks beneath every wave, but it is too late to stop an escalating series of confrontations that lead to disappearances, death and the possible end of light in this world.

As Ysolde plots revenge and a mysterious prince seeks to win Ian for himself, the ancient war between light and dark sweeps Ian and Zeke into its maelstrom of hate, testing their trust of each other to the utmost.

“I love this author’s imagination and skill, from the magical, emotional, and erotic nuances of the romantic pair, the details of the underground world of the svarta, the remote and glacial world of the liosa, and the characters that support or thwart them. Highly recommended!” ~ Velvet Panic

  1. I’ve always thought mermaids ought to be dangerous, like any smart sea predator. Sounds like these ones are plenty dangerous–and more than a bit scary! *cue Jaws theme music*
