Weekend Writing Warriors ~ Band of Fellows

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, the blog hop where writers from a wide variety of genres share excerpts from their work in ten sentences or less.

First I have to say, I will no longer complain about not getting any snow here. We received over a foot this week and I had to stay home from work for two days and just write. Is there anything better than a snow day? (when you don’t have to go anywhere, that is)

Okay, on to the snippet. I have at last reached the end of Chapter One of my reimagined fairy tale, Snow. Yes, Snow. Seems to be a theme for me right now.  Prince Gabriel has returned home after a long absence and encountered a hunting party led by his old nemesis, Gavin Falkner. You can read last week’s snippet here, if you are so inclined. Falkner’s last line was “Do you remember the way, or shall I lead?” .

***

“I remember.” Gabriel flicked the reins and Tempest sprang into motion, much to the excitement of the dogs.  Falkner’s horse, apparently unaware of the three-yard rule, attempted to keep up, but this neither Gabriel nor Tempest would allow.

What began as a simple ride quickly turned into a race, with Tempest easily gaining on the heavier black horse behind him. Gabriel leaned lower over the pommel and a familiar exhilaration overtook him.

Not all his boyhood memories were bad. He’d always been the best horseman at Rosenthal and no one could beat him if he had a worthy horse beneath him. Falkner in particular had tried, and failed.

Those races: Gabriel had almost felt like one of his brother’s band of fellows then, but it never lasted.

As he rode deeper into the bone chilling fog, the woods became little more than a tangle of shadows, and the sounds of dogs and horses faded to muffled yelps and cries in the distance.

Blurb-in-progress for Snow, a reimagined fairy tale:

Following the death of his mother the Queen, Prince Gabriel is called home by his brother, now King. Gabriel hopes for a reconciliation with his estranged brother, but all is not well at Castle Rosenthal. King Tristan has fallen under the sway of a scheming alchemist, the magical denizens of the bordering Black Forest are on the move, and Gabriel begins to fear for his life. Is the handsome huntsman in on a plot to assassinate him, or is there an even darker, more evil force afoot? A forced flight into the Black Forest may expose ancient powers at work, if only Gabriel can survive long enough to uncover them.

  1. Very cool excerpt. I love that he’s such a good horseman…of course now I’m worried because he’s gone so far ahead in that misty mysterious forest LOL. Really a terrific story going on!

  2. Heading right into trouble, I’m guessing. Memories of the past seem a confusing (and interesting!) mix of pleasure and pain for him.
