Weekend Writing Warriors ~ The Rightful Heir

Hello and welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, the blog hop where writers from a wide range of genres share their work in excerpts of ten sentences or less.

I’m continuing to share from Snow, my reimagined fairy tale inspired by the tale of Snow White.  I’m sooooo close to finishing my other WIP, Book 4 in the Jacqui the Cat Mysteries series and I’m sooooo excited that soon I’ll be able to turn all of my focus onto Snow (working title, soon to be replaced with something much more imaginative).

In the current scene, Gabriel’s brother Tristan, who happens to be the new king, seems irrationally angry that Gabriel used magic to stop an arrow in flight.  You can read last week’s snippet here.

Tristan’s fierce gaze was much too close, his brandy-laden breath hot on Gabriel’s cheek. Gabriel bristled, but managed to stay calm.

“What about me?”

“Are you going to boast hither and yon about how you saved the white stag from the outsiders and that you summoned the old magic because you are the rightful heir?”

“Egads, Tristan, no! You know I have no interest in taking your place!” Gabriel might have laughed if Tristan weren’t so furious.

“Do I know that? My wisp of a younger brother went away years ago and now a man—a stranger— stands before me. What besides your stature has changed?”

Blurb-in-progress for Snow, a reimagined fairy tale:

Following the death of his mother the Queen, Prince Gabriel is called home by his brother, now King. Gabriel hopes for a reconciliation with his estranged brother, but all is not well at Castle Rosenthal. King Tristan has fallen under the sway of a scheming alchemist and along the border of the Black Forest, magical denizens are on the move. Gabriel begins to fear for his life. Is the handsome huntsman in on a plot to assassinate him, or is there an even darker, more evil power afoot? A forced flight into the Black Forest may expose ancient magic at work, if Gabriel can survive long enough to uncover it.

  2. Wow! Talk about jealousy. And insecurity. No matter what Gabriel says, Tristan won’t believe him. Can’t wait to read what he’s going to do about it. So glad to hear about Jacqui the Cat. I love him!
