Weekend Writing Warriors ~ The Day I Die

Greetings and welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors! The rains came this week, washing away the smoke and bringing back the soggy, gray Pacific Northwest that I love. Fires are still raging, but what a relief it’s been to get a good dousing, which conveniently leads to my new snippet from Death By Starlight, in which Alistair and Zeke near the end of their successful but possibly deadly mermaid hunt.

Alistair put both hands on his heart. Summoning an impressive amount of magic, the shaman stood and appeared to grow younger and taller. “I want to be with you in the sea. I want to explore the wonders of your world. I want to be your devoted companion and love you until the day I die.”

“That last bit can be arranged!” Mellosa laughed, a guttural, soppy noise. Rising again, she tipped the boat, and when she released it, sent it rocking wildly side to side. Zeke grabbed at Alistair to stop him from going headfirst into the drink. Mellosa dove under the waves, and her massive tail lifted out of the water, then crashed down beside them, sending a huge wave curling over them. Drenched, Zeke was glad he’d thought to protect them from the frigid chill of the water but realized he’d made no plan on how to return to land if Mellosa swamped the boat.

Edge of Night 2: Death by Starlight

In Betwixt and Between, Ian and Zeke fought a battle against the queen of the dark realm in order to be together. Now, when they think they might settle into as normal a life as elves living among humans might be able to expect, a new enemy threatens to tear them apart. While Zeke helps the shaman Alistair in his hunt for an elusive mermaid, Ian is called to confront a wicked nymph preying on tourists along Seattle’s waterfront. Zeke and Ian soon discover that the defeated Queen Ysolde has spread her evil into the sea realms, and danger lurks beneath every wave, but it is too late to stop an escalating series of confrontations that lead to disappearances, death and the possible end of light in this world.

As Ysolde plots revenge and a mysterious prince seeks to win Ian for himself, the ancient war between light and dark sweeps Ian and Zeke into its maelstrom of hate, testing their trust of each other to the utmost.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ A Tricky Business

Greetings and welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors.  I missed last week because I was at a writers conference hosted by Wordcrafters In Eugene.  The focus was on the psychological and forensic reality behind mystery and crime thrillers. Great information, but let me tell you, after spending a weekend hearing about true crime I am very happy to return to my world of wicked elves, dangerous mermaids and the wonderful world of fantasy in general.

I’ve been sharing from my new release Death by Starlight, an m/m urban fantasy set in Seattle. Last week, Alistair declared his love for Mellosa the mermaid.  She was underwhelmed.

* * *

“Men always love Mellosa. Elves, however, are more rare.” Her tongue flicked out like a lizard’s, and she licked her lips. Zeke shuddered again. Perhaps he’d put too much of himself in the lure. Perhaps his thoughts had been too wrapped up in his and Ian’s impending nuptials when he’d performed the magic. Love was such a tricky business.

Alistair gave Zeke a murderous stare, then returned his focus to the very large sea creature hanging from the side of his boat. Zeke guessed Mellosa was of above average size and therefore quite old, maybe as old as himself. What would a beast such as this do with a fragile, crunchy old human like Alistair?

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ Who’s the Elf?

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors.  I’ve been sharing from my latest release Death by Starlight, an m/m urban fantasy.  I’ve got a few more scenes to go until I reach the end of the current chapter, then it’s on to the new shiny thing! Which is very, very shiny. But I promise I won’t leave you hanging, at least not too much. Dark elf Zeke and Alistair the shaman have succeeded in luring Mellosa, a rather large and intimidating mermaid, to Alistair’s boat.

***

Mellosa pulled herself higher out of the water, exposing small, flat breasts much better for streaking aerodynamically through the water than the romanticized versions of myth. The boat rocked, dipping at an alarming angle. If she wanted to, she could have them both in the water in a flash. Mindful of this, Zeke cast a warming cloak around himself and Alistair.

“Who’s the elf?” Mellosa demanded. “He made this?” She lofted the blue agate accusingly.

“Just a friend of a friend who owed me a favor. I needed to talk to you and didn’t know how else to go about it. Mellosa, I’ve loved you for half a century.”

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ Don’t You Remember Me?

Wow, is it really Sunday again? I guess it must be because we’re both here in cyberland, waiting to read fabulous fiction.  So, Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!  I’ve been sharing from my latest release, Death by Starlight, an m/m urban fantasy set in Seattle.  Zeke the dark elf and Alistair the disreputable shaman have been searching for Mellosa the not-so-friendly mermaid out on the Salish Sea.  They  find her, and Zeke notices she’s not quite the charming little mermaid type one might expect.

***

Mellosa’s eyes were huge, mouth wide and full of sharp teeth, including incisors that would put any vampire to shame. Her hair wasn’t really hair but a living, breathing part of her, more akin to fronds or feathery tentacles then the dead strands that covered a human’s head.

Her fingers were webbed, and fins sprouted from her shoulders and biceps. Still, as she drummed her fingers against the gunwale, it was easy to see how a lonely man or woman might become entranced by her.

“Why have you called me from my hunting?” she asked, speaking directly to Zeke in a high, almost screechy voice. Gills on her long neck fluttered softly.

Alistair sank slowly to the bench. “Mellosa, my love, don’t you remember me?”

“Of course I remember you, smelly old man.” The way she emphasized man made it clear she considered the word an insult.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ Seductive Enchantment

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!  I’ve been sharing from my m/m urban fantasy Death by Starlight, and let me tell you, after 100+ temperatures and the smothering cloud of forest fire smoke we’ve been dealing with for the past several days, I would really love to be with Zeke and Alistair out on their boat in the Straits of Juan de Fuca.  I could do without the rampaging mermaid, but other than that…cool fresh air, a hot elf, a crusty old shaman…

Last week, Mellosa went for Zeke’s mermaid bait.  Soon we’ll find out if Alistair is having second-thoughts about his crush.

***

Mellosa held the hexed stone in her fist, and with her other hand she reached toward Zeke.

Uh-oh.

He jerked back, aware he’d been falling under her sway.

“She’s here, old man!” Zeke grabbed the back of Alistair’s parka and pulled him from his seat.

“Where?” They were awkwardly changing seats when Mellosa rose from the water and rested her elbows on the side of the boat. Zeke collapsed into the seat behind the wheel, and Alistair froze in a half-crouch, standing wide-legged in the middle of the boat.

The image of mermaids passed down in lore was mostly mythical, a combination of wishful thinking and the faulty memories of drunken seamen. Although human in general shape and form above the waist, once out of the water and free from the seductive enchantment she’d woven around herself, Mellosa could never be mistaken for human.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ If Not For The Fangs

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, the blog hop where a bunch of really awesome writers share snippets of ten sentences or less from their published work or work-in-progress.

This week I’m continuing to share from Death by Starlight, my m/m urban fantasy which just released last week.  In this scene, Zeke and Alistair are out on the Strait of Juan de Fuca hunting for the mermaid Mellosa.  For good or ill, they are about to find her.

***

An icy shiver crept along Zeke’s skin and ignited every nerve. The wind stilled and the boat settled into a trough, high swells of water obscuring everything but the sky. The sea around them became unnaturally becalmed, and Zeke’s shiver turned into a shudder. The surface was so glassy he could see the dark silhouette of his reflection.

Mellosa’s face replaced his own form, appearing suddenly out of the depths, bright white against black. Her hair rippled out in great streams of crimson, and her eyes were sea-foam green. She reminded Zeke of The Birth of Venus by Bernini. If not for the fangs biting into her full red lips and the eerie bluish aura emanating from her pearlescent skin, Mellosa would have been the very picture of human female beauty. If one was into that sort of thing.

“Something’s happening, but I don’t see her,” Alistair mumbled from his side of the boat.
