Weekend Writing Warriors ~ Trap That Cat

Greetings and welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, the weekly blog hop where a merry band of writers share their work in excerpts of ten sentences or less. I’ve been sharing from my newest release, Prowl, Book 1 in the Jacqui the Cat Mysteries series.  In this scene, Jacqui is talking to Wyatt, the cute cop who lives across the street. The conversation has strayed to the subject of Wyatt’s first unfortunate meeting with Jacqui in his cat form. (Jacqui refers to his inner cat – oddly enough – as Cat.) Wyatt tugged aside the collar of his T-shirt to reveal a very nasty blue-red bruise extending beyond the edges of a square bandage.

“Oh, crap, I’m so sorry,” Jacqui said.

Impressive. We are vicious.

“Not your fault, unless it’s your cat and you sicced it on me.”

“It’s not my cat. I believe it belongs to a crazy cat lady up on Delmore.”

“Claire said it belongs to a crazy cat lady on Mayfair.”

“It’s easy to get them mixed up—there are so many.”

“Well, crazy old cat lady or not, if I can, I’m going to trap that cat and take it to the animal shelter.”

I’ve had some inquiries if my books are available in formats other than Kindle. At this time, only Gryffon Hall is out there on B&N, Apple, etc. One reason is because I’m re-releasing all my Loose ID titles and am just flat out overwhelmed. The other reason is that I’m experimenting with Kindle Unlimited to see how that goes., which means if you have a Kindle you can read the books for free! Weekend Writing Warriors ~ Nine-Inch Nails

Good morning, readers, writers and random internet wanderers. As a participant of Weekend Writing Warriors, I’m sharing excerpts from my newest release, Prowl, Book 1 in the Jacqui the Cat mysteries series.  If you’re Jacqui curious, I’ve posted the first chapter of Prowl here.

In this scene, Jacqui is having his first conversation with Wyatt, the hunky deputy sheriff who lives across the street. They’re discussing a most shocking crime that may or may not have happened recently in their neighborhood.

Jacqui chewed his lower lip and realized he’d been staring unblinking at Wyatt the entire time. This was the type of behavior that made people look at him funny. Wyatt was looking funny at Jacqui’s lower lip.

Jacqui stopped the nervous chewing and forced his gaze down the street. “There’s probably an international planter smuggling ring afoot.”

Afoot?

Wyatt chuckled. He had a nice throaty chuckle.

“Speaking of the evil that lurks, do you know who owns that huge cat with the pointy ears who prowls around the neighborhood?”

“The gorgeous one with the beautiful blue-green eyes?”

“I was thinking more the gnarly one with the nine-inch nails.”

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ A Scandal

Hello and welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors, the blog hop where writers from a wide range of genres share from their work in snippets of ten sentences or less. Books One, Two and Three of my Jacqui the Cat Mysteries series went on sale this week, and I’m happily working on Book Four as we speak. Jacqui has so much to say!  I’ve been sharing from Prowl, Book 1.  You can read the first chapter here. This scene is from Chapter Two.  Jacqui and Wyatt have just met (officially). I skipped ahead a bit from last week, and succumbed to a little creative punctuation to fit the guidelines.

They stood there, Jacqui staring into Wyatt’s yummy caramel eyes and Wyatt staring right back.

He’s checking us out—sexually—imagining how we’d fit.

Yes, he certainly is. The power of Lycra is terrifying.

Wyatt blinked first. He shifted his boxes again. “Say, uh, have you heard about the recent theft in the neighborhood?”

“The three blue pots? Of course, it’s a scandal. What is Friday Harbor coming to?”

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ Hey, Neighbor

Woohoo!  It’s Sunday, which means it’s time for Weekend Writing Warriors, and on top of that, Jacqui the Cat Mysteries, Books 1-3 are now available for pre-order. Yes, you read that right. I’ve released three books at once because it sounded like a really good idea at the time and besides, I have no life. It’s nice to see the shiny covers all lined up to together.

So I’m continuing to share from Prowl, Book 1. We left Jacqui in the middle of lurking behind Wyatt’s condo, musing on how to best approach him after their rather unsuccessful meeting, man to cat.  This is their first encounter man to man. (In case you’re new to this, Jacqui is a cat shifter. You can read about what happened earlier on the Jacqui book page here.)

“Hey, neighbor.”

Jacqui jumped, literally, nearly two inches off the ground.

Wyatt didn’t seem to notice. He was carrying a stack of flattened boxes, headed for the recycle bin at the end of the line of condos. This meant they naturally fell in step.

“Good morning,” Jacqui said, “Welcome to the neighborhood.”

“Thanks.” Wyatt shifted his boxes to fit under one arm and reached out his free hand. Nice long fingers, freckled and dusted with a sprinkling of white paint, ended in broken, dirty nails. Jacqui remembered the hand stroking his back roughly and suppressed a whimper.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ Welcome To The Neighborhood

Welcome to another round of Weekend Writing Warriors, the blog hop where writers from a wide range of genres share from their work in excerpts of ten sentences or less.  I’ve been sharing from my upcoming gay shifter/romance/mystery Prowl, Book 1 in the Jacqui the Cat mysteries series. I have a release date! May 29 the first three books in the series will be available, in conjunction with the full moon. Because cat shifter magic.

In this scene, Jacqui is returning from his early morning run and strolling past his neighbor’s backyard. The neighbor is Wyatt, who Jacqui may have a teensy little crush on.  In earlier snippets, which you can check out by clicking the Jacqui the Cat link under Obsessions, Jacqui in his cat form had an unfortunate encounter with Wyatt. He’s hoping things go better when they meet human-to-human.

Jacqui put his fingers to his neck and looked at his watch, which he didn’t actually wear. He only pretended to take his pulse because he didn’t really care. He was in tip-top shape and breathed easily, even after the climb.

Ever slower, practically stopping, his gaze drifted from his watch-less wrist to Wyatt’s gate, which stood open.

If he was Cat, he could peek in. As Jacqui, that would be creepy. He forced himself to stare at his imaginary watch again.

He regretted their unfortunate first meeting. Bloodshed should not have been involved.

We should bring him a dead bird as an apology slash welcome to the neighborhood offering.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ Keep Up

Hello and welcome to another round of Weekend Writing Warriors, the blog hop where writers from a wide variety of genres share from their work in excerpts of  ten sentences or less. It’s a great way to sample some new fiction!

I’m back to sharing from Prowl, Book 1 in my soon-to-be-released cozy gay romance mystery series, Jacqui the Cat. Oh, yeah, I forgot a subgenre–Shifter. Jacqui is a fashion designer who also happens to be a cat sometimes. He’s got a crush on his hunky new neighbor, Wyatt the deputy sheriff. They haven’t actually met yet (not while Jacqui was in human form, anyway). Hopefully their first meeting will go better than their man-cat encounter and no blood will be spilled.

Jacqui rose before daybreak. His routine was to run eight miles every morning, out around the airport and back. While he could never match the speed and strength of his cat self, he tried hard to coax his human body to keep up.

He ran. He did yoga. He lifted weights. As a result, he looked damn good in his stretchy Lycra running pants and zip-up jacket, even if he did say so himself.

He pushed hard up his hill for a final burn. He usually ran all the way to his front door, but today he felt the need to slow, and then walk ever slower, past the condos across the street. The lights were on in Wyatt’s apartment.

Human Jacqui knows he shouldn’t spy on Wyatt, but sometimes his inner cat is just too pushy.
